The main ideas presented in Rouenby May Wedderburn Cannan Essay Explore the main ideas presented in Rouen. How effective is it in exploring ideas about the First World War? Consider the structure, imagery and language. There are various key ideas that have been presented in Rouen by May Wedderburn Cannan. She has made a great use of different literary devices to describe her realities of war on the frontline whilst she worked as a VAD nursing injured soldiers. Regarding its wider use in exploring ideas about the First World War; it is a primary source and is about her experiences and the feelings that she had undertaken. Therefore we have first-hand evidence to use to compare and contrast against other poetry of the time. Wedderburn Cannan makes great use of nature and environment to describe and illustrate what she had experienced. She starts firstly by describing her transition to getting to Rouen and then speaks of all the young men with their heart breaking mirth; here she describes them as if they are all having fun and enjoying their comradeship. Thereafter she juxtaposes this idea with the train full of wounded who are being transported away due to the travesty presented thenceforth in Rouen. Men who came from darkness and went back to dark again the continuous work that they had only ended once they had passed. This shows that the sheer realities of death were omnipresent in her service as a VAD. She also makes reference to the King, bugles and our island although not to remember and be proud of them although to forget the eveningswhilst the world slips slow to darkness. Finally, she ends on the note that her heart goes out to Rouen and the trains that go from there. The language that Cannan uses within the poem is very emotive and she makes connotations with different things to help us feel what she is going through. For example the voices of the Indians from this quote we can see a deeper understanding into her ideas about World War One. She also constantly repeats and for effect and to act as a list that the idea of there being neverending problems with the sufferings of the men. This is repeated for every stanza except the last and it could also be seen as a way of her being overwhelmed by the situation emotionally and she just goes on letting it all out. The structure remains extremely mechanical and static throughout with thirteen quatrains; this is primarily extremely unusual for a poem and goes with the idea that she has become repetitive. I think that this fits in with the idea that she feels emotionally overwhelmed and thus due to this, she keeps on with this release in chunks. The poem hasnt been blurted out although it has been well thought and written showing that she must be from a well-educated background such as VADs had been. In Rouen, the persona seems to feels a sense of questioning and disillusionment for the purposes of the war. And the agony and splendour when they stood to save the King?. This shows the feelings that they had towards the War and the leaders who were making this siege in Rouen with such bloodshed. To conclude, I believe that Rouen is a good and effective source to use in order to explore the events of the First World War for women VADs such as Wedderburn Cannan on the warfront such as in the city of Rouen. The language and structure link well with her having a rather mechanical style of writing and that idea that she has become emotionally drained and overwhelmed; and that as an educated lady she has no other way to recapitulate these feelings.

Personal Identity And The Soul The idea of personal identity is a concept we are consciously living but one we are never quite aware of. Our actions are determined by the anticipation of our future pleasures and future pains. This anticipation is shaped by instances in our past where a particular behavior or action on our part creates a result that we find desirable or undesirable. Our soul is that underlying thread that makes a connection between a situation we are faced with in our present lives to what we have lived through from the vast reservoir of our personal experience. Of the different types of personal identity; the Soul Theory, Memory Theory and Brain Theory, I think the soul theory offers the most complete explanation. We are at any given time, the sum total of our collective life experience that includes the people we have met, the situations we have lived through and the stories we have heard of through the people we encounter about others and their life experiences. For there to exist a connection between an individual at one point in their lives and their selves in another point in their lives, these two versions would have to exhibit traits that cannot be acquired through any other means but personal life experience; i.e. actually living through it. Evidence for such traits is evident in the existence of idiosyncratic individual memories and the logic behind setting goals. If an individual were to lock themselves in a room with no windows, furniture or technology, and they were to write on the palm of their left hand the word red, a day later there is no way for anyone else to know what happened inside the room unless that individual were to divulge those details themselves. A day later then, this individual would be the only one to retain the memory of themselves inscribing red onto their left palm, and this individual memory and the inscribed characters prove beyond reasonable doubt that the individual inside that room a day earlier, and the individual who retains the memory the next day are one and the same person. The evidence for this connection is not physical, but a referenced memory. While the letters can be erased, the memory is not as easy to remove. Hence the continuity between these two versions is not physical, but mental. It cannot be quantified or measured physically, and neither can the soul, but its presence in our lives is overwhelming. Our logic when we make decisions in every aspect of life is based on memories of sitiuations that we reference where we were able to obtain a result we find desirable or to avoid a situation at we find undesirable. Our soul, or our conscious self within our body, examines the experiences readily available in our mind at any given point of our lives and chooses a path that would help us attain what we want. Therefore the soul is the chief navigator for our actions and behaviors for the past, present and future. This notion gains even more prominence because the concept of the soul exists independently of religion. It is not dependent of the existence of God. Those who argue against the soul theory may say that the individual traits that are displayed by an individual before and after in the room experiment, exist independently in the body and not the soul. This objection lacks credibility because is fails to account for those that are identical in their physical makeup but have diametrically opposite personality traits. If personality traits were dependent on our physical selves, that would allude to a scenario where people with identical bodies, if put through the exact same situations for long periods of time would develop similar personality traits. Another version of this statement would argue that people with similar physical makeups would react to stress and other highly emotionally demanding situations in similar ways. But there is no evidence for either of these last two statements to gain any credence. The existence of different and even diametrically opposite personality traits amongst survivors in holocaust camps in Nazi Germa ny disproves this objection to the soul theory. Many of these survivors suffered the same horrors and were worn down to similar body types, but the way their conscious selves dealt with those inhumane conditions differed tremendously. The existence of a wide variety of behaviors to combat those inhumane times proves that there was something within each of these bodies that differentiated them from one another. And this difference was the entity of the soul. When thinking of personal identity, we must look at the body and soul as two pieces of the same whole. The sum total of our sensory organs helps us to see, touch, feel and smell every single life experience that we encounter. But without the soul, which is our conscious self, we have no way of classifying this incoming information and relate them to our lives. Such catharsis happens as a result of the soul, which defines our personal identity. Our soul shapes our perspective, and helps us identify what behaviors and actions we should implement when faced with any situation in our lives. We compare what we are experiencing or what we want with other similar situations from our past and look for some residual pattern that can justify an action or behavior that we deem suitable as a response to that individual situation or experience. The body serves as the vessel that aides the soul by providing it a wealth of information, and the soul in turn helps the body navigate through the waters of life. By providing a link between individual versions of each one of us at different times of our lives, the soul theory most completely offers an explanation for personal identity. Personal identity is the notion that each one of us displays certain idiosyncratic traits or identifiers that exist only within ourselves. These identifiers differentiate us from those around us. Since the creation of these identifiers, which are in effect actions/behaviors and personality traits that we pick up through our life experience, is dependent on our conscious thinking during which we weigh the pros and cons of each action/behavior and trait in terms of their effectiveness to get us a desirable result in similar situations in the past, they cannot exist in the absence of a soul. Therefore, the soul theory is indispensible when thinking of personal identity.

Is it logical that at that moment the purveyor of life is contemplating whether his freshmen philosophy class back at SMU has thoroughly prepared him for what he is about to do? Not likely. In higher learning institutions, liberal art classes like philosophy are not meant to be directly applied to one’s life or career; however, they are structured and devised to be a strong base that the individual can expand upon through scientific learning and experience. This is precisely the reason colleges and universities require and place much emphasis on these classes; nevertheless, there has been a shift away from the liberal arts towards the direction of highly specialized areas of science and business because of their growing integration in everyday life. A lthough people need a limited number of liberal arts classes to attain a basic understanding of ourselves and our evolution, state universities are aptly moving towards technical education, because, in this fast paced world, many people don’t have the time or money to spend studying the humanities alone. With the advent of the internet, technical schools, and computers in general, jobs today are more specialized than ever before, and they will continue to increase in particularity, thus a purely liberal arts curriculum is very untimely. Most people take four years to attain a bachelor’s degree of some kind and if they want a salary increase it requires at least two more years of graduate school before they can even think about entering the workplace. If people study only humanities for six of their most pivotal years of life, depending on their field of work, they may have a very small base of technical knowledge to utilize. Critics argue that â€Å"overemphasis on liberal arts can be detrimental to people† and ask â€Å"why doesn’t one just go to technical school to get what they are really after?† It’s because most jobs require the mental capacity to adapt as time passes. This mental capacity is obtained through studies of the liberal arts. Cell Phone Use Should be Prohibited While Driving A small sedan is crawling through an evening of rush hour traffic on I-65. Aware of the huge SUV attempting to merge into the lane, the driver slows in an effort to allow the vehicle to claim a space in the horde of eager business men and women fleeing from offices and pushing towards typical Friday night destinations. The driver of the SUV is unaware of the tiny car beside her and smashes into the automobile and curses into her cell phone. A witness a few cars behind quickly dials 911 on his cell phone. Unable to pay attention to traffic and dial the phone at the same time, he crashes into the truck in front of him causing a pile up of several cars. Because of the distraction they provide to motorists, cell phones should be banned from use by drivers of moving vehicles. According to the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA), nearly 168 million U.S. citizens used cell phones in August 2004 (Cell Phones and Driving). Without a doubt the number increases daily. Cell phones are becoming as American as baseball and apple pie. The insane amount of cell phones in the hands of distracted drivers can only mean one thing: a higher chance for an accident and that is exactly what is happening. ?A 1997 article published in the New England Journal of Medicine [stated]?the use of cell phones in motor vehicles?quadrupled risk of collision? (Cell Phones?on Highways?). This is a large increase considering accidents are being cause by a wireless device being used for meaningless phone conversations while sharing an interstate with other distracted drivers. Removing cell phones, an obvious distraction, is one way to reduce the number of traffic accidents. Simply not answering the persistent ring or allowing a passenger to dial and make the p hone conversation could save many lives. Life in America has become so fast paced that the separation between work and home is not apparent?especially when major business deals are being made by business men and women who are making left turns and sitting at four-way stops. As stated in the Electronic Engineering Times, ?Harvard?s Center for Risk Analysis?[shows]?2,600 people a year are killed and 330,000 are injured in car crashes involving cell phones? (1). With these statistics it would be expect that police officers responding to car accidents would document the proper information and ask if a cell phone was involved in a car accident.

Safety Officer This role is very important as they produce the risk assessment for the sport taking sports and the facility around it, to ensure that there a minimize risk of any injuries to happening whilst taking part in the physical activity.It's important to have a risk assessment in place as if an injury does happen the tournament could be shut down and the people who ran it could get sued. The safety officer is also in charge of first aid arrangements for the day. This is very important as if this is not in place then the people can get sued for not having the right equipment. For example if someone feel over and cut their knee, and a first eider wasn't on side to deal with it and it got infected, the participant could beco me Organizer The organizer is responsible for sorting out the schedule for the day and what Jobs here needs to be.E. G. Umpires, runners (get score cards), first eider. If this isn't done the tournament wouldn't run smoothly as everything/everyone would be unrecognized and not sure what going on. Another role of the organizer is to record the results. Again this need to be done correctly as if it is not then a team might have scored more goals than they have put down and could cost them a place in the ranking. Sports leader The role of the sports leaders are to check all the equipment and make sure they are safe to use and the facility is in good condition and there are no risks where artisans could get hurt.This important as if the equipment isn't check and ends up being not safe it could cause serious harm to the participants taking part. If a piece of equipment is broke or damaged it shouldn't be used or taken out of the facility by the sports leader. Coaches The role of a coach is to look after their teams from the start to end of the tournament, making sure their team players knew when they were playing. What pitch they were playing on. Where the toilets, first eider, refreshments areas SECT. They also have the responsibilities to make sure all the participants are safe and one of the participants go missing.Umpire The role of the umpire is to officiate in the games at the tournament. They need to know the knowledge of the rules and keep on top of the scoring in the tournament. The role of the official manger is to create the rules for the tournament. This needs to be done correctly so that everyone understand them and can enforce them. Another role is to officiate the tournament too, this means he needs to make sure they are, sending letters home to parents, teams available and want to take part, make sure they have a good facility, correct equipment etc.Another role of an official manger is to have the important information for each participant. For example if it's hot weather, advice participants to wear sun cream and bring plenty of fluids and a hat. This is important as children can become dehydrated very easily and if drinks facilities are not on offer then dehydration could occur. Safety of the FacilitiesWhen preparing a sports tournament, the following considerations should be Made for the facilities in which the session is to take place: Coaches and leaders must familiarize themselves and the participants with the safety and emergency procedures specific to the facility and activity A full risk assessment should be undertaken, reviewed and updated for the facility and activity DO Reviewing the Tournament Sports organizers must consider action that is preventative and is documented in the risk assessment. Injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrencesCollect data on the type, frequency and nature of any injuries will help you to see if you risk assessment is doing its Job and minimizing the risk within the facility. Also the facility is safe and appropriate for the sports activity which is taking place. This information can be found in accident books and RIDDED document, it's also very important to write down any near misses that has happened and the reason why it dangerous, this would show good sports organizer. By looking at the risk assessment you can see that every risk has had taken action to minimize the risk.You can see hat they do have a first aid room where any injuries that have happen are delta with in that room. At the end of the session an overall review of suitability to the activity should take place. Suitability of equipment and facility. Before starting the session it's important to select the appropriate equipment for the participants who are taking part in the session plan. E. G. Children use different use football compared to adults, has different size goals and pitches. The best way to make sure you are following the correct guidelines is by the national governing body f Netball.You sure also make sure the equipment safe too, a review should be taken place during the activity so the observed the safety and suitability of the equipment. But also to observed the safety and suitable of the facility. You can see in the plan that the facility had a storage room where all the equipment go. Positive Looking back at the tournament I feel like it went well and the event overall was a success. One of the positive comments I received is that the girls enjoyed taking part and taking part in the competition.Through-out the day I went round to all the different teams to see if they needed alp with anything and to see if they were enjoying themselves. All of the girls and their coaches said yes. This made me feel like a successfully planned the event which proved a have good organization skills. The next positive comment I received was the is layout of the tournament was good, everything was very clear. E. G. The number of the court, where the toilet are SECT. This made me feel like I picked the best venue to hold the tournament. A positive out of the tournament was the umpires.They done a great Job in keeping up with play, timing the games, keeping the score and knowing the rules of the Ames throughout the day. Without the referees the event couldn't have gone ahead as no one would have refereed the games Another positive out of the tournament was the first aid available. They were very quick to react to any injuries that occurred throughout the day. This was important to eiders, we would have been stuck if there was an injury as no one would know how to deal with it. Improvements If I were to do this event again I would have more organizers to control the amount of children there was on the day of the tournament.As there were a lot of artisans and by having more organizer it would of made the day run more smoothly as I give each team a organizer to tell where they are going next and where anything is . An area I could improve on for the tournament was the refreshments. I only had one refreshment stall which was quite big, but there wasn't enough workers in there, therefore it took longer to serve people . This is important to improve so people get served and the there isn't a queue of people as this could cause someone to get a injury. For example someone pushing in the queue and end up pushing someone over and then them injuring themselves.The way I got this feedback from the tournament was a questionnaire which I gave to each team to fill out. This was a real help in finding out how people found the day and the tournament itself. Below is the results of the questionnaire.
