Changing Roles of Women free essay sample
Honey, Iââ¬â¢m Homeâ⬠now doesnââ¬â¢t even have a gender orientation to it, but only 30 years ago it referred to the ââ¬Å"bread-winnerâ⬠(the man of the house) coming home after a long day of work greeting his wife. This idea of male dominance is shown in the text Mirror on America, in the picture where the groom is holding his wife who is drastically smaller than him, showing some sort of dominance a male has over a female (63). It is also shown in the picture where the man looks like he came home from a long day of work and waiting for his wife to serve him dinner (62). Nowadays itââ¬â¢s a little different most women are employed full-time and have to come home to clean and cook for their families. Unfortunately, things are almost exactly the same the if not harder for women because now they not only have to cook and clean, but they also have to work. Dave Barry, the author of the essay ââ¬Å"The Ugly Truth about Beautyâ⬠, in the text Mirror on America believes women are too concerned with the way they look. He implies that women are never satisfied with their look, while all men ââ¬Å"think of themselves as average lookingâ⬠(35) . Women feel they have to strive to enhance their looks because the image society portrays of ââ¬Å"beautyâ⬠is far from the average womanââ¬â¢s features. The author relays this message when he talks about supermodel Cindy Crawford giving out makeup tips: Cindy had all these middle-aged women applying beauty products to their faces; she stressed how important it was to apply them in a certain way, using the tips of their fingers. All the women dutifully did this, even though it was obvious to any sane observer that, no matter how carefully they applied these products, they would never look remotely like Cindy Crawford, who is some kind of genetic mutation. (35) Unfortunately, everyone even me has been affected by societyââ¬â¢s view on beauty. I believe my view on ââ¬Å"beautyâ⬠is very similar to that of most men. I believe a personââ¬â¢s beauty is easily enhanced by their personality. The character and personality of a person is determined by their experience, background and childhood. Children are influenced greatly by their surroundings as well as their role models whether they are good or bad role models to have. The insecurities women have about their looks are due to their upbringing. I think the toys they played with the things they did were all major causes of how they feel about themselves. For example, the things that just for little girls, like dolls, playing house, playing tea party, and the easy bake oven. Little girls see these dolls and try to emulate everything they do, even their figure and appearance. A great example of this is in the text Mirror on America, Gloria Borger the author of the essay ââ¬Å"Barbieââ¬â¢s Newest Valuesâ⬠gives us some views on how a simple little doll like Barbie affects the lives of women. The makers of Barbie, Mattel have decided to change Barbieââ¬â¢s figure to make her features not so unrealistic. Barbie is ââ¬Å"getting new breasts (smaller), a new waist (wider), and a different mouth (closed)â⬠, this change Mattel hopes will make Barbieââ¬â¢s looks a little more attainable (39). Lets be honest all little girls see Barbie and have this need to look and be like her, Barbie portrays exactly societyââ¬â¢s view on ââ¬Å"beautyâ⬠, slender, tall, big boobs and a small waist. This is why the gen X-ers (whatever that means) feel ââ¬Å"that Barbie has hurt their self-imageâ⬠(39). On the other hand the poem ââ¬Å"Rite of Passageâ⬠by Sharon Olds, also in the text Mirror on America shows us how little boys are affected by society. Her poem is about her son and his friends at her sonââ¬â¢s birthday party. In the poem she shows us that male chauvinistic ideas are shown in little boys, even at the age of six or seven. She conveys this message when she writes ââ¬Å"How old are you? Six. Iââ¬â¢m seven. So? [â⬠¦] I could beat you up, a seven says to a sixâ⬠(51). I think itââ¬â¢s funny how little boys and little girls are brought up so differently, one is expected to be feisty and mischievous and the other is supposed to be calm and obedient. I interviewed two females about the changing role of women in our society. One was my mother, who recalled a time right after she got married in India. She had to move into her mother-in-lawââ¬â¢s house to learn how to cook. My mother told me that she had to clean and cook for the whole family, but now my mom works full-time and does all the housework with a little help. She is glad that things have changed and women now can choose to work or stay home with the children. The other person I interviewed was one of my peers, she is a college freshman right now. She was telling me although many things dealing with the roles of women have changed, most of them are pretty much the same. For example, a women is still expected to cook and clean even if she works full-time. She also said she wasnââ¬â¢t planning on having children (I do hope she was kidding), but she did say she wanted to get married. I think she said this because she doesnââ¬â¢t want to lead the normal life of the average woman. In my eyes the normal life of the average woman consists of going to school, graduating, getting a job, getting married, having children, and taking care of the children and house while working at a job. If we look at history the world has unfortunately always been a male dominated society. The role of a woman is society is slowly changing. In the article ââ¬Å"Flying Soloâ⬠from Time magazine August 8, 2000 the author Tamala M. Edwards explains how now its ok for a woman to never get married and be single all her life. Edwards quotes Philadelphia psychotherapist Diana Adile Kirschner when she writes the ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve ended the spinster eraâ⬠(48). For those of you who donââ¬â¢t know what a spinster is (which I didnââ¬â¢t before reading this article), a spinster was a derogatory term used towards unmarried older females. Edwards later writes ââ¬Å"Single by choice itââ¬â¢s an empowering statement for many womenâ⬠, showing that many woman donââ¬â¢t feel it is necessary to get married. The poll Time magazine took shows only 24% of women definitely want to get married. So as we all can see the role of women has changed, but hopefully it will continually keep changing until there is some sort of equilibrium between the roles of men and women. I personally want to be a house-dad (male version of the house-wife) because I want to see my children grow up and I donââ¬â¢t mind cooking and cleaning. So hopefully when I get to that age when I have kids it wonââ¬â¢t be looked down upon to be a father staying at home taking care of his kids.

Music: Why it is the most important thing in my life. Essay Why it is the most important thing in my life. BY couple Music is the most important thing in my life. The reason this is, I think, is because my family was built around two main things: Music and Religion. Although I value religion greatly, I think you cant have worship without song. Also, I was influenced by my siblings because they each listen to music to a great extent. I listen to mostly all types of music because I think it is important to have a rarity of favorite genres. The style of music I listen to mostly it Heavy Metal, but I also listen to some rap, and Christian rock. My friends also have their own styles of music that are different from mine, but I listen to them from time to time and have gotten to like some of them. For instance, My friend Anabas listens to Rock but also listens to Spanish Rock, even though I cant understand it, I still have come to like mom Spanish rock songs because of the sound of the music. Another example is my friend Chris, He likes country but likes rock also, even though I dont like country I still listen to it from time to time. My family members are like musical interments, every one of us has our own unique style, shape, and size. Music is one thing my family is based on, thats why its the most important thing in my life.

The Essay Format of Medical School
The Essay Format of Medical SchoolA diversity essay is an important part of the application process for medical school. Some students may be able to focus on their schoolwork and extracurricular activities, but many students need to get a head start on their essays as soon as possible. Because medical schools are highly competitive, it is important that all students are prepared and they write the most thorough essay possible.Although the essay is optional, it is always best to prepare a diversity sample before you sit down with your college counselor to discuss admissions. These samples are often asked to send to colleges by law, or else they will not be accepted. It is especially helpful to do so if you can find one already written. Many medical school applicants like to choose a diversity essay that takes a personal perspective. But it is often difficult to find something that is complete. You may be able to find a sample essay online, or by looking at the sample letters of recomme ndation. If you are going to use a sample, it is important to note that it must be accurate for medical school admissions. Many colleges and universities won't allow you to submit an essay that does not follow the proper grammar or sentence structure. Using an inaccurate sample may cause colleges to reject your application. For students going to a secondary school, there are some steps you can take to prepare an essay. First, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you aren't confident that you can write a quality essay, it is best to avoid it.Second, spend some time writing the essay. Research is important in this process. Be sure that the topic and the content of the essay reflect the interests and talents of the student.Third, encourage students to write about themselves. Asking for input is the first step to writing a unique and well-written essay. Students who feel comfortable writing about themselves will be able to craft a more complete essay. Finally, before the final step of the p rocess, students should do some research. If they have a question about the essay, they should look it up online. Or they can consult the college counseling office. They should always feel comfortable asking questions.

Educational quality Essay Example
Educational quality Essay 1. Should educational quality be allowed to differ based on family income? Should vouchers be allowed to supplement a tuition payment at a private school, with the result that some childrenââ¬â¢s quality of education would differ from other childrenââ¬â¢s? Discuss. In an ideal world, all children would have the same opportunities for high-quality education. In much the same way that children do not choose the race and religion of their parents, children do not choose the income level of the family they are born into. Thus, it would only be fair that all minors would have equal opportunities for quality education regardless of family income. A main dilemma is that between choice and equality. It can be argued that families should be able to choose where their children are educated; however, it can also be argued that everyone should have equal quality education, and that private schools undermine this ideal. One important consideration is that members of the public who can avail themselves of vouchers will no longer be interested in the quality of public education. A voucher system would create a dilution of public interest, which results in the deteriorating quality of public education. This creates a feedback loop, where the deteriorating quality of public education makes private schools (and vouchers) the preferred option, and where the availability of vouchers contributes to the deterioration of public education. Vouchers should thus not be allowed to supplement tuition payments at private schools. Myra: I think voucher amounts should vary with household income. The more income, the less help-itââ¬â¢s only fair. Fred: I think education should be free for everyone. Your income shouldn`t have any thing to do with how much voucher power you have. Evaluate Myra`s and Fred`s ideas. If a voucher plan is to be used, should the voucher amount depend upon a person`s income? Myra alludes to fairness in her argument. However, fairness can be viewed from another perspectiveââ¬âit can be argued that giving unvarying voucher amounts would be more fair, in the same way that the public school system, which is free for everyone (and not partially free when it comes to richer families), is presumably considered fair by the general public. In a sense, vouchers are simply an extension of the public school system. Ideally, the ââ¬Å"voucher system,â⬠in effect, should make private schools a part of the public school system, which means that vouchers (assuming that they are to be used) should be distributed in unvarying amounts. Thus, household income should not be a factor for the determination of voucher amounts to be received, in the same way that the religion and race of a childââ¬â¢s parents are not considered.

The U.S Entering World War ll essays
The U.S Entering World War ll essays The U.S Entering World War ll"A date that will live in infamy," (Snyder 33) was what President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called December 7, 1941. It was a calm Sunday morning at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. Then two U.S. soldiers saw an oscilloscope signal on their mobile radars. They immediately called this in to their commanding officer but he told them to ignore it because the base was expecting a squadron of friendly B-17's to be coming from the mainland. Thirty minutes later the first bomb fell and almost killed a courier boy who was trying to deliver a message to Pearl Harbor Naval Base that the Japanese Imperial Navy was going to attack them. The Japanese bombers caught the base by surprise due to the Americans' tradition of not working on Sunday's. As the bombs fell, so did all the chances of the United States not joining the Allies in the second world war that was raging in Europe and the western Pacific. Up to that point the U.S. had just been supporting the Allies but they weren't technically at war with the Axis powers. All throughout the first two years of the war, President Roosevelt focused on making life difficult for the Japanese. One way he did this was by creating various policies that would deter the Axis powers from being able to maintain the needs necessary to wage war on the Allies. One of these policies was the American financial and economic embargo, which supported China in its fight against Japan. It also, somewhat, forced neutral countries to side with the U.S. because it threatened that if any country would aid one of the Axis countries then that country would no longer be given aid packages from the United States. A second policy imposed by Roosevelt was the "moral embargo" of July 1938. This banned neutral countries from exporting planes and equipment to countries that engaged in the bombing of civilians. This made the U.S. look like the good guys because they were protecting the i...

Computer H Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Computer H - Essay Example The statutes and charters in these industries do not distinguish the variations in such technologies. This advocates for the frequent lawsuits between companies and transnational organizations. Moreover, the patent laws in the industry emphasis on flexibility due to the vast growth and development of new technologies (Jordan, 2012). Competition is always a significant element in all industries but in computer technology production sharing ideas on areas such as graphic user interface and operating systems is not a major issue because novelty and innovation are the key determinants of success in such an industry. Relatively, the flexibility aspect of the patent laws and system in general only give protection on a neutral perspective hence making it easy for a company such as Apple to sue Samsung (Grandoni, 2013). Due to the constant lawsuit in the last decade, some of the recent advancements in the computer industry entailed the expansion of a wide scope of the patent laws in different technologies. A good example is on software development where firms like Apple, Microsoft or even Google have no idea on the patents they overstep because they operate at an international level (Goldman, 2012). The patent laws in the United States might not be the same in places like India or Japan. Currently, statistics show that software patents are in hundreds of thousands especially with over 30,000 new ones developed in 2014 alone. With such as wide scope, most of the infringement companies involve in is usually unintentional (Jordan, 2012). Additionally, the multi-billion dollar companies such as Google, IBM and Microsoft have their own patents based on their products; not software development. This patents or charters act as a threat towards their competitors and it is the duty of all these companies to know the regulations/ patents set by competing rivals in the industry or else it can lead to lawsuits (Megan, 2012). For instance, Yahoo has around a thousand patents

Rationalism (Rene Descartes) and Empiricism (David Hume) Essay
Rationalism (Rene Descartes) and Empiricism (David Hume) - Essay Example According to the research findings there are two contrastive schools of thought; while one gives premium to reason, the other gives premium to experience. The first school of thought that gives premium to reason is the rationalist school of thought. The second school of thought is the empiricist school. While the major proponent for rationalism is Rene Descartes, the major proponent of empiricism is David Hume. Lacey states that rationalism is ââ¬Å"any view appealing to reason as a source of knowledge or justification.â⬠Instead of appealing to emotions and their sensory organs, rationalists appeal to the intellect. Like all things, there are extremes in rationalism. While the opinion of some rationalists tends to fall largely in line with empiricism, meaning that they share many links with empiricism; the opinion of others see no reasons with empiricism at all. The former category of rationalists is not absolute in the beliefs they hold about the power of reason. The latter c ategory of rationalists is of those that may safely be described as extreme rationalist. They are the ones that believe that all things can be resolved through reasoning. Although, empiricism as a philosophy has already been broached in this essay, it is yet important to explain further. Unlike rationalism which states that most truths and ideas can be attained mainly through reason, empiricism states that all ideas, knowledge and truths can be attained through experience and what can be sensed by using human senses. The typical empiricist will ask 'How do you believe what you've not experienced?' So, for the empiricist, experience is all. It is through experience that one gets evidence to substantiate whatever opinion one clings to. Empiricists believe that there is no just reason to believe a thing or an opinion which one is not able to test. They do not see reasons why anyone would rely solely on abstract reasoning without applying sense-based experiments (Markie 233). To such em piricist who questions why anyone would trust what they have not seen, rationalists would argue that before that which is seen and witnessed (experience and experiments) came to being, there was that which was not seen (reasoning). Asides David Hume, other philosophers that can be categorized as empiricists are Francis Bacon, John Stuart Mill and Thomas Hobbes. Before one assumes any stance in philosophy, one must have premises that back up the point one makes. One must also be sure to know that all those who have held one opinion or the other about any issue have reasons, most times cogent, for sticking to their opinion. Yet, based on arguments that have been advanced overtime, it won't be wrong to assume that rationalsim carries the day. In putting up a paper like this together, it is important that one lends credence to objectivity. By some yardsticks, one may say that empiricists are right. This is because when rationalists carry out what they believe is the key thingââ¬ârea soning, one must note that they do not think in abstract, they almost certainly think about things that have been
